My most embarrassing moment in Canada

Anytime I remember this day, I still get embarrassed, as it feels like I am reliving the moment. When I first came to Canada, I barely ate out and mostly ate home-cooked food, so I hadn’t visited a lot of fast food spot. I had only been to McDonald’s with a friend and that day I followed suit and did everything she did at the restaurant so I looked like I knew what I was doing.

Fast forward to a couple months later, I had to go to subway by myself to get food as I had been in school all day with no food and I was starving. I went to subway and ordered a sandwich that came in a combo (sandwich, cookies and a drink). I was given the refillable cup to get my drink myself. When I went to the dispenser to get my drink, I assumed it would be the same process as what I had done at MacDonald’s.

On getting to the dispenser, I didn’t find the lever I needed to push to dispense my drink, so I kept looking for the lever or some sort of button that would help dispense my drink. I didn’t find anything. I went to the coffee machine thinking it was connected somehow to the dispenser. I was playing around with it as well and still couldn’t figure it out. Keep in mind that other people were on the queue in the restaurant, staring at me and laughing. I went back to the counter and told the lady that gave me the cup that I couldn’t find where to get the drink.

She pointed back to the machine and said nonchalantly “it’s over there.” Fortunately for me someone else had ordered something with a drink and they went to the dispenser to get the drink so I watched the person. Alas! The dispenser had a touch screen function above it that one has to press to dispense the drink. Once the person was done, I got my drink and as I was leaving the store, people were staring at me and laughing! I felt so embarrassed but I just kept going like I didn’t care. That was so embarrassing 🙈

  1. Experience is the best teacher, I’m glad you didn’t let those mean people see how you actually felt.👌🏼

But it’s all good now. We learn everyday and things keep upgrading.

  4. Mamayero k. Bah

Omg it seems embarrassing but to me is like you cannot learn without going through hardship, and remember it can be in many forms so yours was through embarrassment. Thank you for teaching me too in case i fall in the same track.

  5. When I originally commented I seem to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I recieve 4 emails with the same comment. Is there a way you are able to remove me from that service? Kudos!
